Most of my earrings and whatnot are made with anodized aluminum rings, but I know they're not everyone's cup of tea. Here are some designs using more understated silver-plate rings -- they are a base metal (usually iron) plated with silver, so they're wonderfully shiny, but far less expensive to produce than pure silver. Because they are silver plate, they're a bit heavier than aluminum, but not so much that they'll stretch your earlobes out. (For size reference, my earring stand is about 2.5" across at the widest point.)
