Why the redesign?
In short:
I was tired of the old design.
At length:
- Site considerations:
- I was tired of the blue-ness of my site as it was, and
the silly background on the frameset.
- I was also tired of the the too-eclectic fonts I had for navigation -- they
were cute at first, but the more I looked at them, the more I thought they were
just annoying.
- I
wanted to make the whole thing consume less bandwidth, using more text and
fewer graphics, and clean it all up. (This should make it easier for people to
print, I think.)
- Moniker considerations:
- I've increasingly been using the moniker Jan Andrea in my web dealings, while
decreasing the use of "Rev. Jan". The difference was potentially confusing,
especially in reference to the baby crafts.
- The whole "Reverend
Jan" thing feels really five-years-ago to me:
I just don't feel like that's my
persona anymore.
- I'm no longer interested in seeking debates about atheism vs.
religion; if someone writes to me, I tend to direct them to my previous writings,
rather than engage them. That all takes way more time and energy than I can devote
to a losing battle at this point.
- The Baby Crafts section attracts a wide variety of people from an enormous
range of backgrounds, and I didn't want to turn off, for
example, fundamentalist Christians from
using them just because it said "Reverend Jan's Happy Atheist Page" at the top.
Granted, it would be their loss, but as an evangelical babywearer, I want those
directions to be fully available to *everyone*, not just those who agree with
me.
- Miscellaneous:
- I really like the tagline "At home on the web," because that's
pretty much how I feel -- I have a lot of friends online, and spend an awful
lot of time on the web -- I really am at home on the web.
- It's been a couple of years since my last change, and it was Time.
Please let me know what you think of the new look, and if you encounter any
problems as a result of the update.
